My work as an educator

I have always had an interest in working with students in a number of different fields. Recently, I've been lecturing design modules in the School of Computer Science at the University of St Andrews with students on their Masters course in HCI.

Learning to be creative

Learning about the 'real world', how it works and how to make a living is a vital life skill but so is learning to be creative and perhaps this can influence how a person goes about how they do business. Free from the financial shackles that a contract can bring, students often demonstrate some incredible insight and creativity; they learn to iterate, to try things and to worry less about making mistakes - these are vital lessons for a designer. Observing the students navigate their way through design challenges is hugely rewarding; their enthusiasm and fresh perspectives offer insight and inspiration.

The future

Not all of our students will go on to be designers, many will enter other sectors and businesses but I hope that they do so with an increased understanding of what it is to be a designer and to think like a designer. I believe that design-thinking can improve how businesses work at all levels and there is no better way to understand how a designer works than to be one.

Thinking about the user can really change how you feel about all the things around you and it is a core belief of mine that a user-centred design approach needs to be forefront in all of our minds. I hope that our students come away sharing some of my enthusiasm for these ideas.
